A former dental nurse from Greater Manchester has opened a new restaurant after launching a new business during the pandemic.

Self-employed dental nurse, Abbie Owens, was unable to work during the lockdowns. Short of money and with time to spare, Abbie learned how to cook from watching YouTube videos. Before the pandemic, she had never cooked Caribbean food, but shortly after creating the ‘jerk chicken munch box, selling the first product to a friend on social media, orders came flooding in. Abbie soon earned a reputation in the local area and she decided to capitalise on the demand and open a stall at Hyde Market.

The demand for Abbie’s Caribbean jerk chicken continued to rise and her stall earned rave reviews from customers. After what has been a crazy couple of years for Abbie, she is now thrilled to have her own restaurant in Haughton Green, Denton. What started as a small-scale venture from her kitchen during lockdown when she was cash-strapped and unable to claim furlough developed into an exciting career change.

Abbie briefly went back to dental nursing to try to earn more money for her new business and she nearly didn’t make it after locations for the restaurant fell through, but just as she thought her luck was running out, she came across a unit on Gibraltar Lane. The Jerk Stop, which is famed for its jerk chicken, as well as other Caribbean classics, including curried goat, now has a large local following.
