Fluoride levels adjusted in Iowa

Newton Water Works adjusted the level of fluoride in the town’s water supplies earlier this week, it has been announced.

Levels of fluoride were reduced from 1.0-1.2ppm to 0.7ppm in accordance with recent recommendations made by the US Department of Health and Human Services. The reduction has also received support from the Environmental Protection Agency, the American Dental Association, the Iowa Department of Public Health and the American Water Works Association.

The Department of Health and Human Services said that the reduction of fluoride in the water supply would enable people to benefit from fluoride, whilst preventing children from developing fluorosis, a condition which occurs as a result of exposure to too much fluoride.

The new level of 0.7ppm will benefit oral health without exposing children to too much fluoride; fluoride has been proven to reduce decay and protect the teeth, but many people are worried about the role of fluoride in other health conditions and many communities in Canada and America have voted against water fluoridation.
