A dental practice in Fishguard will stop providing NHS services from April 1st.

West Street Dental Practice will offer private treatment only from the beginning of April. Until March 31st, patients will be able to access urgent NHS appointments. The team will also be contacting patients to ensure that courses of treatment that are already underway can be completed.

News of the changes will undoubtedly cause worry among patients but the local health board has reassured residents. In a statement, Hywel Dda University Health Board said that it is working with local clinics and the team at West Street Dental Practice to minimise disruption and find a new NHS provider. Anyone affected by the termination of NHS services will be contacted and offered advice about making alternative arrangements.

The board will now begin the process of looking for new NHS providers. Jill Paterson, director of primary care, community and long-term care at the health board, said, “We are grateful for the support that patients have given to the practice over the years and we appreciate the concerns patients may have at this uncertain time. We are working to find a solution, which secures NHS dental services for the longer term.”

The Welsh Government recently unveiled plans to fund an extra 112,000 NHS dental appointments during the next financial year. Minister for health and social services, Eluned Morgan, said that the government wants “everyone in Wales to be able to access NHS dental care, if they want it.” The government has pledged an extra £2 million per year in funding for dental services in Wales.
