Fears for future of dental practice in York following changes to parking restrictions

The owners of a dental practice in York have expressed fears over the future of the business after new parking restrictions were introduced outside the surgery.

Members of staff have threatened to leave the practice because they can no longer park outside the practice due to changes brought in by York City Council. Previously, employees could park their cars outside Restore 32 Dental Practice but residents-only permit parking has now been introduced in Howard Street.

The changes mean that staff who need to drive have no choice but to use expensive city centre car parks. The cost of paying for parking every day is taking a significant bite out of employees’ weekly earnings. Bosses are worried that the practice could fold if the problem isn’t resolved soon.

Sharon Whitehead, the practice manager at Restore 32, said that the team has been in contact with the council about the situation but nobody is willing to help. The council suggests using the city’s Park and Ride service but this is not a viable option for all staff members. Sharon claims that the roads around the practice are empty during the day because most residents work and accused the council of failing to support local businesses.

Representatives from City of York Council confirmed that changes were implemented two months ago as a result of resident concerns over a lack of parking. According to the council, the resident permit scheme has been expanded in the area to enable residents to park close to their homes, reduce city centre congestion and promote sustainable transport.
