A father and daughter team from Salisbury, North Carolina, are celebrating after realising a dream. The pair successfully organised a charity dental event at the weekend, which helped hundreds of people to gain access to much-needed dental care.

Three years ago, Christina Dunkin, who was in her final year of college studying dentistry at the time, asked her father why Salisbury could not host a Mission of Mercy dental clinic. Three and a half years on, the pair is in high spirits after taking part in Salisbury’s first Mission of Mercy clinic.

Christina and her father, Jim, who was the community coordinator for the event, worked with dentist, Dr Dave Mayberry, to make their dreams become a reality. Last weekend, around 800 patients visited the clinic, which was a great success.

In the early days, Jim set about raising funds for the event, which he was told would cost at least $50,000. Thanks to generous donations from the Robertson Foundation, The Old North State Dental Association and a cheque for $25,000 from an unnamed individual, who had seen details of the event in the local paper, donations totalled $77,000 and Jim and his team started to coordinate information and make plans for the clinic.

Dr Dave Mayberry recruited 124 dentists for the events and 160 dental students in addition to a large team of dental hygienists and nurses.

The event was supported by local businesses and colleges, as well as churches and charities and Jim, Dave and Christina were thrilled with the kind wishes, donations and hard work, which made the clinic a resounding success.
