A dental team from Farnham has raised hundreds of pounds for a mouth cancer charity.

Staff from Holistic Dental Care completed a 10km charity walk with survivors of mouth cancer to raise funds for mouth cancer charities. The walk took place in Hyde Park and the team wore customised t-shirts to raise awareness of oral cancer.

In total, the team raised more than £850 for charity by taking on the 10k walk and the event was a great success. The annual walk generates donations for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and brings dental and health professionals together with mouth cancer survivors and those who are undergoing treatment and their friends and families. The primary goal is to raise money for research into treatments and therapies and provide support for families affected by the oral cancer.

The Hyde Park walk also offers an opportunity to raise awareness of mouth cancer and encourage people to learn about the causes and symptoms. Mouth cancer rates have risen dramatically in the last decade yet awareness remains very low compared to other forms of cancer. As a result, 5-year survival rates have stalled, as most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage.

The most common symptoms of mouth cancer include abnormal lumps and swelling, difficulty swallowing, red or white patches in the mouth, a persistent sore throat and slow-healing mouth ulcers.

Practice manager, Sharon Saunders, said that raising awareness of mouth cancer is a priority for the team. She added that the walk was an inspirational event, which not only bought the team closer together but also enabled staff to meet some incredible people.
