A family from the UK has flown to Brazil to avoid waiting to see a dentist.

Stuart and Kedma Woodmansey decided to travel to Kedma’s home city of Sao Paolo because they couldn’t get a dental appointment. The family has tried to register with local NHS dentists for the last five years.

There is currently a two and a half year wait for NHS appointments and even for private dental care, they were told there would be a six month wait. Kedma is almost nine months’ pregnant and has found it impossible to see a dentist despite trying throughout her pregnancy.

Stuart, a security consultant, explained that the couple decided to fly to Brazil with their son, Jacob, after being unable to get an appointment at home. In a TV interview, Kedma joked that she would try to register her baby as soon as it is born so that by the time it needs a dentist there will be places available and added that she hoped trips to Brazil would be a temporary solution.

A new report compiled by Healthwatch recently revealed that around 40% of patients have experienced difficulties getting NHS dental appointments. Over 15% of adults surveyed also suggested that they felt pressured into booking a private appointment when trying to arrange a visit to an NHS dentist. The survey involved 2,000 adults in England.
