A dentist from Evesham is preparing to take on Africa’s largest desert to raise money for charity.

Dr Mark-Steven Howe, from Broadway Dental Care, will travel to the Sahara Desert in April to take on a truly gruelling challenge all in the name of a good cause. Dr Howe will be taking part in the 28th annual Marathon des Sables, which is a 156 mile challenge, consisting of six consecutive marathons. Around 1,000 people will be competing and Dr Howe is running in aid of the Air Ambulance.

Dr Howe, who lives in Sedgebarrow, said that looking after his feet will be a priority, as there is so much ground to cover and very little recovery time; he added that he will need to pace himself and believe that he can complete the challenge. Dr Howe has competed in Iron Man events in the past and is looking forward to a new challenge.

The competition rules state that runners must be completely self-sufficient, which means that they must carry their own belongings and everything they need with them at all times, except water.

Dr Howe spent five years in the Royal Air Force and he will be drawing upon his physical and mental training to complete the series of marathons. He is hoping that patients will get behind him and donate to help raise money for the Air Ambulance
