NHS England’s chief dental officer, Sara Hurley, has paid dental students at the University of Portsmouth a visit as part of a TV filming project.

During her time at the academy in Southsea, Ms Hurley was introduced to staff and students and she took a tour of the school to find out more about the resources and facilities on offer and talk to students about their experiences in Portsmouth and the outreach work they do in the local community.

Ms Hurley was welcomed to the academy by Vice Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth, Professor Graham Galbraith, interim director Leanna Wynne and Latha Davda, the clinic’s director.

Talking about her visit, Ms Hurley said it was a “real pleasure” to have a look around the academy and talk to students about their studies and their aspirations for their future careers in dentistry after graduation. Ms Hurley was very impressed with the facility and also with the students, whom she described as “talented individuals.”

Ms Hurley was also filmed by the BBC as part of an oral health segment for BBC One’s Inside Out.

Ms Hurley assumed the role of NHS England’s chief dental officer in April.
