England tops table for dental costs

England is the most expensive country for dental care, according to a recent study.

The study was based on the cost of a filling and the results ranged from just 8 Euros in Hungary to 156 Euros, equivalent to £117, in England. The study took the dentist’s time, the cost of materials and X-rays and overhead costs into consideration.

England was closely followed by Spain and Italy, but costs in other Western European countries, such as France and Germany, were less than half the price of those in England. Unsurprisingly, the countries which rated lowest in the study, Hungary and Poland, have emerged as the most popular destination for British dental tourists.

The study focuses on private dental care in England and does not involve NHS fees; on the NHS, a patient can have between one and six fillings for a flat fee of around £45. In recent years, many people have resorted to registering with a private dentist as a result of struggling to find an NHS dental practice that is taking on new patients; however, the government has vowed to continue investing in dental services and trusts are targeting underserved areas to try and improve access to NHS services.
