Ely residents have responded to a request from the local press for stories about their dental experiences after it was revealed that the town has one of the lowest dentist to patient ratios in the country.

Several people got in touch with local reporters to share their experiences. One resident said that he couldn’t find a dentist between “Ely and St Ives” despite numerous phone calls and visits to dental surgeries, while another said that she had an appointment cancelled in August and rearranged for summer 2023.

A patient called Steve messaged to say that he had a series of appointments cancelled at short notice with no offer to rearrange. He was then unable to make an appointment because his family had been taken off the list due to not attending for a long period. Another patient, Gary, said that all the local practices that used to offer NHS dental care had now switched to private services making it very difficult to access affordable treatment.

Data released by the Care Quality Commission showed that there are currently 0.078 dentists per 100,000 patients in Ely. This is one of the lowest ratios in England.
