Elgin dental team collects festive donations for local food bank

A dental team from Elgin is collecting festive donations for a local food bank.

Staff at Spynie Dental Centre usually organise a Secret Santa present swap, spending around £10-£15 on gifts for a colleague. This year, to help the community, the team has decided to spend the money on donations for Moray Food Plus, a local food bank.

Instead of going out shopping and stocking up on presents for each other, the team has been buying food to donate to the food bank. The cost of living crisis is impacting residents in local villages and towns and the practice wanted to do something to make Christmas that little bit easier for those who are struggling.

Dental nurse, Mhairi Sowter, said that she was thrilled that everyone was behind the idea and added that it was a joint decision to do something different and “support other folk in the community.” Mhairi has volunteered at the food bank in the past and knows what an incredible difference it makes to the people who use it.

The food donations allow the practice team to “give something meaningful back,” Mhairi said and the project has the full support of the 30 employees.

The staff recognise that this year feels different, and for many, it will be a struggle to put food on the table with the cost of shopping rising at the same time as energy bills are increasing.

Food banks across the UK have reported a surge in demand due to high rates of inflation, which are pushing prices up, and an increase in the cost of energy, fuel and monthly rent and mortgage costs.
