Elementary school students in the School District of Beloit will partake in a new oral health programme entitled “Seal-A-Smile”. The programme, which was made possible with the help of a fifteen thousand dollar grant from the Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Department of Public Health, aims to help provide dental care for over eight hundred youngsters in the area. The programme, in its first year, was launched in partnership with the School District of Beloit and Community Health Systems Inc.

According to a press release from Community Health Systems, Superintendent Milt Thompson aided in the selection process to choose the school that would partake in the programme. The programme will involve a dental hygienist and an assistant treating the young students twice a year, offering dental screenings, fluoride varnish and sealant treatments. Community Health Systems Inc. dentist Lakisha Aris-Holmes was quoted as stating; ‘It will help. There are a lot of children out there who do not have a dental home.’

Community Health Systems runs four federally qualified health centers in south Wisconsin, including the Beloit Area Community Health Center, and Aris-Holmes said she felt that the programme would help make a difference in the children’s lives and help to get them interested in dental care.
