A group is urging dental practices to go green in 2010 as it could save the planet and a substantial sum of money too.

The Eco-Dentistry Association (EDA), which already has hundreds of members from 11 countries even though it only launched in the spring, claims that practices can save up to $50,000 a year if it incorporates climate conscious methods.

The EDA argues that a little goes a long way with steam sterilization saving dentists $828 a year on chemicals and digital imaging, including equipment investment, saving more than $8700 on supplies and other savings.

If dental surgeries switch to reusable cups instead of paper cups they can save $178 annually and cut down on the amount of rubbish accumulating in landfills.

Switiching to reusable sterilization methods can also save $2,337 p/a and reduce the amount of waste produced.

Energy efficient lighting cuts down on CO2 and saves around $601-worth of electricity per year.

The EDA offers dental professionals loads of practical tips which reduce waste and pollution and conserve resources.
