Dudley Zoo celebrates National Smile Month

Keepers at Dudley Zoo have been celebrating National Smile Month by carrying out dental check-ups on animals at the zoo.

Most of the animals have monthly check-ups and some also undergo regular cleaning treatments. According to Chief Executive, Peter Suddock, said that routine dental checks were an important part of the animals’ care; Mr Suddock said that oral health problems can be very harmful to the general health of the animals and staff were keen to promote good oral health amongst the zoo’s residents.

Many animals are prone to oral health conditions and most people do not realise that animals’ teeth need to be looked after in the same way as human teeth. Recently, animal charities have launched campaigns to encourage pet owners to clean their pet’s teeth on a regular basis and give them chews and food that will help to clean and strengthen their teeth. It is hoped that the efforts at Dudley Zoo will encourage people to look after their pet’s teeth and enable people to learn about the importance of their pet’s oral health.

National Smile Month is a national campaign, being run by the British Dental Health Foundation and Oral B; the programme aims to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health. Many people are not aware of the potential dangers of poor oral health and don’t realise the damage they are doing by neglecting oral hygiene. The campaign is running until the 16th June and is being celebrated in schools, colleges, dental surgeries and community groups right across the country.
