Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

Dr Carter has been awarded the OBE in recognition of his service to the dental industry and oral health.

Dr Carter is currently chief executive of the BDHF and was previously the chairman and a trustee. In total, he has been associated with the foundation for over 35 years.

Dr Carter qualified from the University of Birmingham before opening his own practice in the city and he also managed a company, which provided training for dental nurses and technicians.

The British Dental Health Foundation is an independent charity, which promotes oral health and raises awareness of the importance of oral hygiene and healthy lifestyle habits. The foundation is currently running the National Smile Month campaign, an annual campaign designed to encourage people to take care of their oral health. The BDHF is also celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Dr Carter said that the OBE was a “tremendous honour”, which honoured not just his work, but also the work of the BDHF and its many members. Dr Carter added that great leaps have been made in dentistry over the years, but there is still a long way to go and education plays a very important role, so that people are aware of the importance of oral health and the association between oral and general health.

President of the BDHF, John Siebert, said that he was delighted for Nigel and described the OBE as a fitting reward for his hard work, passion and dedication.
