Dental practices are gearing up for the mass disruptions that will occur during the London Olympics during the summer. The Olympics start on July 27th and are expected to affect public transport, and staff issues as well as difficulty driving in certain areas. As the games start in a matter of weeks people are being urged to start planning well in advance of any appointments.

There will be over 14,000 professional sports people coming to London from all over the globe ready to compete in the world’s largest sporting occasion. There have been over ten million sales of tickets for both the Olympic and the Paralympics sporting events.

The company Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland, which is based all over the Uk advises dental practices to start preparing for any problems or changes and to plan ahead ready for when the games start.

Janice Sibbald who works as the MDDUS advises practices to look at any traffic or road problems and plan round them and to make sure they have all the staff they need and back up staff if need be. Some staff may want to have holiday time at the last minute and some may not feel as motivated during the games so look at how these issues can be dealt with effectively.

She says: ‘Although the Olympics are fast approaching, there is still time to prepare your practice for any eventualities. One important first step is to clarify the staffing needs of the practice and ensure policies are up-to-date, especially those on absence, holidays and flexible working.

‘If your practice is situated near a Games venue or a travel hotspot, then this may have an adverse impact and present challenges to employees and patients.”
