A Scotland-based dentist who was strongly condemned by the General Dental Council is being allowed to continue in the profession.

Dr Abid Faqir, whose treatment of a Kilmarnock patient was called ‘undoubtedly misconduct’ by the council (GDC), has been told he can keep practicing as a dentist if he abides by certain conditions.

He was found guilty of badly fitting a number of dental implants, which cost thousands of pounds, to a patient who was recovering from breast cancer and failing to abandon the procedure when they did not attach to the bone.

The GDC also said that 32-year-old Dr Faqir, who now works in Glasgow, failed to properly assess his patient and kept substandard records

It is allowing him to practice dentistry providing he agrees to have a professional mentor, who will help him keep to his professional commitments.

He also is being required to provide evidence at a hearing which proves that his record keeping, clinical judgement, radiograph skills, communication and informed consent skills have improved.

Prior to this incident Dr Faqir was hotly tipped as one of dentistry’s rising stars.

At one point he was named as one of the most influential dentists in Britain and was previously awarded the title of Best Young Dentist in Scotland.
