A Virginia dentist has been given the American Dental Association’s Humanitarian Award for his tireless work helping underserved people.

Dr Terry Dickinson, who worked for 30 years in private dentistry, was named as the 2010 recipient of the association’s (ADA) award for all the outstanding work he has done through the Missions of Mercy Project (MOM).

Founder and director of the project, Dr Dickenson established MOM in 2000 and has now been recognised for his voluntary commitment and leadership which has had a huge impact on oral health.

Dr Ron Tankersley, ADA President, hailed Dr Dickenson’s enthusiasm, devotion and ingenuity calling him “remarkable”.

He added that Dr Dickenson’s efforts had had a profound impact not only in Virginia but also across America.

Around a dozen states now benefit from MOM programs and Dr Dickenson hopes that there will be eight more programs in operation by the end of 2010.

“I realized my mission was to focus on bringing help to those who struggle every day to put food on the table, to pay rent, to put gas in the gas tank,” Dr Dickenson said.

The ADA will be donating $5,000 to MOM as part if Dr Dickenson’s Humanitarian Award, which he will receive at the associations annual conference, held in Orland in 2010.
