Diabetes Awareness Campaign Launched In GP And Dental Surgeries

Diabetes UK has launched an awareness campaign to encourage patients in the UK to attend regular health and dental checks.

The campaign aims to encourage diabetes patients to have a minimum of nine health checks per year in line with recommendations set out by NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence).

Figures released by the National Diabetes Audit from 2010-2011 show that a large proportion of diabetes patients are going without vital health checks; the date shows that uptake for regular health checks is particularly low in Stoke-on-Trent, with just 34.9 per cent of patients undergoing the recommended health checks.

Diabetes UK has sent posters and adverts out to GP surgeries, health centres and dental practices across the UK. The adverts set out the ‘15 essential healthcare’ factors for diabetes patients.

Pete Shorrick, Regional Manager for Diabetes UK in the Midlands, said that it is important that diabetes patients understand the need for regular health and dental checks, as diabetes increases the risk of a host of medical and dental problems, as well as problems with sight and vision. Diabetes UK is hoping that the adverts encourage patients to have the relevant checks and to discuss any problems or concerns they have with their GP or dentist.
