Developer submits plans to turn former car showroom site into flats and a dental surgery in Westcliff

A developer has submitted plans to convert a former car showroom site in Westcliff into new flats and a dental surgery.

The site, which is located on London Road, has already been approved for development. In 2016, planning permission was granted to build a three-storey block, which would house a dental clinic and six apartments. Now, the developer has expanded on the initial application to create a four-storey building, paving the way for two additional flats.

In a statement accompanying the revised application, the developer suggested that the four-storey option would be a “more efficient use” of the plot. The extra storey would fit in with surrounding buildings, which are of a similar height.

At present, details of the new dental surgery are limited, but the application states that the clinic would be a ‘21st Century’ facility fit for the demands of modern-day patients. The clinic would serve the local community, providing dental services on the doorstep for residents.

The application is the latest in a string of submissions for former showrooms on London Road. Recently, a request to build more flats was rejected by councillors in Southend. Local councillor, Fay Evans, suggested that the existing infrastructure was insufficient to cater for more residential properties, with a lack of GP services, hospitals and school places cited as reasons to turn down applications.
