Graphic design students from Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group have flexed their creative skills to support a local oral health campaign.

Second year Level 3 students have joined forces with University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) to provide the artwork for the #KeepStokeSmiling campaign. The initiative is designed to raise awareness of the importance of looking after the teeth and gums and encourage Stoke residents to adopt good oral health habits.

In the last month, students from the colleges have designed billboards for the public health campaign. The aim is to reduce the risk of tooth decay among children and young people. Two students, Abi Greenwood and Ross Burlington, were selected to provide artwork to front the programme.

Rates of dental decay among young people in Stoke-on-Trent are high. Statistics show that rates of hospital admission for dental issues are up to four times higher than in the rest of the UK.

The campaign utilises a variety of measures, including education, to highlight the prevalence of decay and encourage people to embrace preventative techniques, such as teeth cleaning and healthy eating.

Karen Juggins, consultant orthodontist at UHNM and the driving force behind the campaign, said that it was “fabulous” to have the students on board to raise awareness of oral health issues among young people in the local area. Many of the students represent the target audience and it has been brilliant to be able to talk to them, get ideas and work together collaboratively to spread positive messages.
