Design Student Launches New MP3 Teeth Jewels

A design student, who was inspired by grills and tooth bling sported by rappers, has designed a new MP3 tooth jewel, which allows individuals to control the device with their tongue and listen to music by means of bone conduction.

Aisen Chacin, a design student at the Parsons The New School for Design in New York, developed the MP3 tooth jewellery by attaching a vibrating motor to an MP3 player and connecting it to an impression of her upper teeth.

Chacin added controls to the underside of the mould to allow users to control the device by simply moving their tongue. The sound is loud enough to allow users to listen without the need for headphones and if the volume is increased, eventually other people will be able to hear the music.

The device, which is named Play-a-Grill, allows users to listen to music by bone conduction, which carries sound through the skull.

A video posted on YouTube shows one of Chacin’s friends trying out the MP3 grill and looking surprised when the device worked and he was able to hear music through his teeth.

Chacin revealed her quirky invention at the New Interfaces for Musical Expression conference, which took place last week.

Talking about her innovative device, Chacin said that the Play-a-Grill device allows people to combine interests in fashion and music. Grills were made popular by rappers including Nelly.
