Dentists Worried About NHS Cuts

Dentists in the UK are worried about the impact of NHS cuts on vulnerable dental patients.

A survey suggested that the majority of dentists are worried that cuts in NHS budgets will affect services, leaving many patients without access to the treatment they need. The survey, which was carried out by the British Dental Association, targeted professionals who work with patients with special needs. The findings revealed that two thirds of participants were concerned that cuts would mean that vulnerable patients were neglected and denied access to the services they require.

Participants said that they were worried about the number of dental posts under threat as a result of NHS cuts and many also commented that specialist equipment was not being replaced. The results of the survey showed that dentists were also worried about the impact of cuts on their patients. 83% said they thought patients were waiting longer for treatment, 72% said patients were receiving a reduced range of services and 58% suggested that the quality of care was compromised.

The British Dental Association has taken note of the concerns raised by dentists and representatives will write to the Department of Health to discourage Primary Care Trusts from making cuts in special needs dental services.
