Dentists Warn Against Bottled Water

Sample News Big

Dentists in America have warned that choosing bottled water over tap water could be contributing to increased rates of tooth decay among children, due to the lack of fluoride in bottled water.

Jonathan. D. Shenkin, spokesman on paediatric dentistry for the American Dental Association, said that it was important for children to have access to fluoride, through using fluoridated toothpaste, visiting the dentist for fluoride varnish treatments and drinking tap water.

Amy Wilson, an author and actress from New York, was shocked when her 4-year-old son needed fillings, as he did not eat sweets or drink fizzy drinks on a regular basis and she supervised him brushing his teeth. One evening at a party, a friend who happened to be a dentist asked Amy if her son drank bottled water, to which she replied that he did. The dentist said that missing out on fluoridated water was increasing the risk of the child developing decay, because fluoride helps to protect and strengthen the teeth.

There is no clear research to link drinking bottled water with a higher incidence of decay, but Shenkin and other dentists are eager for parents to be aware of the benefits of giving their children fluoridated water.

Linda Says :

What studies prove that bottled water without fluoride increases tooth decay? If that were the case then how did the WHO do a study of 24 cities and those with and without fluoride showed little or no difference in tooth decay? When fluoride is added to the public water system it is in all foods eaten everyday at home or in resturants yet you think if they have a bottle or two of water that is what is causing tooth decay. That statement is not even reasonable. There are whole cities without fluoridated water and whole countries as well. Europe 97% fluoride free, Canada 60% fluoride free and many, many others yet you think everyone has rampant tooth decay, not only is it not true it has been proved with one of the biggest studies to date.
