Dentists launch new root canal therapy campaign

A group of leading dental professionals have launched a new campaign to inform people about root canal therapy.

The Saving Teeth Awareness campaign has been launched to inform patients about infections and conditions which can contribute to tooth loss and raise awareness of the benefits of root canal therapy. The campaign was established due to a widespread lack of knowledge about endodontics, with many patients assuming that an infected tooth could not be saved.

Recent NHS figures show that two million teeth were taken out last year; only half a million root canal treatments were undertaken. The key aims of the campaign are to promote saving a tooth, as this is the best option for the overall health of the mouth, to inform people that root canal therapy can restore an infected tooth and the tooth will function in exactly the same way as a natural tooth and to encourage patients to see their dentist as early as possible if they think they have an infected tooth, as bone loss can occur if the tooth is left untreated.

The campaign has been spearheaded by leading endodontists, Julian Webb and Trevor Lamb and high profile dental patients, including Peter Snow and Michael Winner have also backed the initiative.
