Dentists issue warnings over DIY Tik-Tok whitening hacks

Dentists and dental bodies have issued warnings over popular Tik Tok DIY dental hacks, including whitening methods, which can cause irreversible damage to the teeth.

Dr Paul Springs is one of many dentists who has spoken out about the dangers of listening to advice from Tik Tok users and influencers. One of the most talked about subjects on the platform in terms of dental treatments is tooth whitening.

An incredibly popular cosmetic solution, whitening is designed to lighten the enamel to create a brighter, healthier-looking smile. Professional whitening treatment should be administered by trained, qualified, registered dentists.

Dr Springs highlighted three DIY whitening hacks on Tik Tok, including rubbing the teeth with banana peel, using bicarbonate of soda to remove stains and applying hydrogen peroxide to the teeth.

There is no evidence to suggest that banana peels can whiten the teeth, while applying bicarbonate of soda can do more harm than good, Dr Springs explained. Bicarbonate of soda is usually used in paste form and it can be very abrasive, which can damage and weaken the enamel.

The most alarming trend is using hydrogen peroxide at home to whiten the teeth. Hydrogen peroxide is a form of bleach, which can cause permanent damage to the soft tissue in the mouth.

Dentists use hydrogen peroxide to whiten the teeth, but the quantities are carefully controlled and patients are assessed in advance to confirm suitability for treatment. Very low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide are unlikely to make a difference, while high concentrations could cause chemical burns.

The advice from dental experts is to visit a trained, qualified, experienced dentist for professional, safe, effective whitening treatment.
