Dentists Issue Warning Over Summer Diet

Sample News Big

Most people are looking forward to spending time in the garden or jetting off to sunny shores this summer, but the British Dental Health Foundation has urged people not to forget about their oral health over the summer months.

The BDHF has issued a warning over acidic foods, which contribute to acid erosion, a major cause of damage to the protective enamel surfaces of the teeth. According to dentists, the summer months are particularly dangerous for the teeth, as many foods traditionally associated with holidays, including olives, salad dressings, cider and red wine, are very acidic.

Enamel is extremely hard and durable but once it starts to wear, there is no means of replacing or rebuilding it and the tooth becomes susceptible to decay and damage. Once the enamel is worn, the dentin becomes exposed, which causes tooth sensitivity, especially in contact with very hot or cold food and drinks.

The BDHF said that many people are unaware of potential oral health problems caused by eating acidic foods because many of the foods are perceived as ‘healthy’ and it can be difficult to determine whether or not there is a risk of acid erosion.

The BDHF has warned people about holiday foods as part of National Smile Month, a national campaign which will run until June 20th.
