Dentists in Birmingham, Alabama, are preparing for a busy day, as hundreds of patients are expected to turn up at a free dental clinic. UAB School of Dentistry will be offering free dental care throughout the day to help out low income residents.

Dental care will be provided inside the school, while the outside space will be turned into make-shift stalls and treatment rooms for a health fair.

The event will run from 8am until 4pm and is being supported by UAB Dental School, UAB School of Nursing and Cahaba Valley Health Care, as well as a host of local dental offices and health agencies.

Dean of the dental school, Michael Reddy, said that the school is among the first in the country to host a charitable event on this scale and he is proud of the work that has gone into organising the health fair and the commitment and hard work of staff and students.

A range of treatments including restorations, cleaning treatments and tooth extractions will be available on the day and students from the School of Dentistry and the School of Nursing will be involved in the event.

Alabama Medicaid provides no cover for adults over the of 21 years old and as a result it is very difficult for adults on low incomes to afford dental care; there is also a huge demand for low-cost dental treatment compared to the supply and many adults are going without he treatment they need purely because they do not have the money available to pay a dentist.
