Dentist withdraws plans to convert Barrowford chapel into new practice

A dentist has withdrawn plans to convert a chapel in Barrowford into a new practice and apartments.

Tom Friar submitted a planning application to turn Saint Peter and Pauls Roman Catholic Church in Gisburn Road into a new dental practice and three apartments in June. He has now notified Pendle Borough Council to withdraw the application.

Mr Friar, from Skipton Road Dental Surgery, modified the plans after several objections related to traffic and parking. However, the revisions were not sufficient to make the application viable, according to Lancashire County Council.

The council received several objections from residents and the Highways Department flagged multiple issues, including increased traffic and footfall, narrow roads, patients leaving cars in front of residents’ homes, waste collection and the proximity of the practice to sharp bends.
The application was formally withdrawn on the 22nd of August.

The chapel was built in 1897 and functioned as a Catholic church until 2019. The chapel closed due to decreasing congregation numbers, increases in parking charges and the availability of other services in the local area. Mr Friar had planned to create a brand new dental practice and three one-bedroom flats.
