Dentist urges the public to avoid home tooth whitening hacks
Dental director at MyHealthcare Clinic, Dr Theo Sioutis, is urging the public to avoid home tooth whitening hacks.
Studies suggest that DIY dentistry has become more common during the pandemic and there has also been a surge in the popularity of cosmetic treatments, such as tooth whitening.
Many dentists have experienced an increase in interest in aesthetic treatments since the first lockdown and the rise of social media and reality TV have also contributed to a rise in the number of people wanting to enhance their smiles.
Professional tooth whitening is a safe and effective treatment, but there are dangers associated with therapies and methods that are not approved or administered by trained, registered dentists.
Dr Sioutis suggested that many of the DIY whitening hacks seen online and on social media and apps like TikTok can cause severe and long-lasting damage to the teeth and gums.
Dr Sioutis urged patients to think about seeing their dentist, rather than taking advice off influencers or social media users if they want to brighten their smile.
Some of the most hazardous DIY whitening tricks include hydrogen peroxide and household items, such as baking soda and apple cider vinegar. Hydrogen peroxide is used by dentists to whiten the teeth, but it must meet stringent safety requirements.
In the EU, the maximum hydrogen peroxide content is set at 6% but consumers are buying products that contain up to 35% hydrogen peroxide online. These products can damage the tooth enamel and the gums and even cause chemical burns.
Apple cider vinegar has a very low pH value, which is dangerous for the protective enamel coating. Exposure to acids can increase the risk of tooth wear, decay and sensitivity. Baking soda is abrasive. When applied to the teeth, it can weaken the enamel and increase the risk of cavities and tooth sensitivity.
Dr Sioutis encouraged anyone who is interested in tooth whitening to contact their dentist or an approved, reputable dental clinic that offers cosmetic dental services.
