Dentist, Anna Peterson, has taken to TikTok to offer advice to users to boost their dental health.

Under the username, annapetersondental, Anna advised followers to avoid using mouthwash straight after brushing.
The clip might have come as a surprise to many, as using mouthwash is usually seen as a positive step to improve dental hygiene and lower the risk of decay.

The important thing to note with Anna’s video is that it encourages users of the platform to steer clear of rinsing immediately after brushing their teeth.

Having attracted attention with a title that suggested that using mouthwash could increase the risk of decay, Anna posted again explaining her reasons for issuing the advice.

When you clean your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, fluoride is deposited on the enamel, which helps to strengthen it and protect the teeth. Mouthwash has a much lower fluoride content than toothpaste, meaning that rinsing reduces the power of fluoride by removing it from the teeth.

Anna stressed that she is not against the use of mouthwash and added that she advises some of her patients to include mouthwash in their daily oral hygiene routine. The key is to wait for the fluoride to take effect before reaching for the bottle of mouthwash.

It’s also important to wait to brush the teeth after eating to enable to enamel to remineralise and to avoid rinsing with water directly after brushing. Instead of brushing after eating when the enamel is under acid attack, Anna suggested that this could be a good time to rinse with mouthwash to neutralise acids and protect the teeth.
