Dentist Swaps Blackpool for Sudan

A dentist from Blackpool has given some of the poorest people in the world something to smile about.

Dr Tamer Alaredy visited Sudan for the first time in 2006, when he donated a mobile unit to provide dental care for people living in rural communities. He now visits the country on a regular basis to provide dental services from the mobile unit.

Dr Alaredy decided to dedicate some of his time to helping people in Sudan after his initial visit left him shocked and upset at the desperate situation thousands of people found themselves in, with no access to basic dental care and very poor living conditions.

Dr Alaredy has a dental surgery in South Shore and divides his time between Blackpool and Sudan. He said that he still finds leaving very difficult, as people worry that the dental team will not return and they will be left without the services they so desperately need.

Dr Alaredy said that he regularly treats more than 100 patients every day during his clinics in Sudan, but the demand is so high that this barely touches the edges. He works closely with the charity Human Aid Appeal, a cause which is linked to the United Nations and the UNICEF.

Jahangeer Akhtar, project manager at Human Aid Appeal, said that Dr Alaredy had already made a huge difference to many people’s lives in Sudan and the charity will continue to work with him to help people in need.
