Dentist suspended because his English isn’t good enough

A dentist from Dumfries has been suspended by the local NHS board because his English is not good enough.

Onofrio Brancato, an Italian who qualified in Bologna in 1985, has been suspended because he failed to prove that his spoken English was good enough. NHS Dumfries and Galloway confirmed the suspension, saying that the dentist had failed to provide evidence that he obtained the required levels of English language skills.

Mr Brancato, who worked at the DADDS practice, is believed to be extremely shocked at the announcement. His colleague, Vasileios Vasilaros, said that Brancato was surprised to hear that he was being suspended because of poor English skills; however, the practice has had to move quickly to recruit another dentist in order to continue providing care for patients.

Mr Brancato was working under restrictions, which were imposed by the General Dental Council on the 11th March; the restrictions stipulated that Brancato must be supervised by a clinical assessor and also enabled NHS Dumfries and Galloway to impose additional restrictions or conditions on his practice if they believed them to be necessary. The restrictions were due to stay in place until November.

The suspension will remain until a hearing has announced a final outcome with regard to Mr Brancato’s future.
