Dentist submits planning application to change chapel into a new practice
A dentist is hoping to open a new practice in a chapel in Barrowford, Lancashire.
Tom Friar, from Skipton Road Dental Surgery, has submitted a planning application to convert the church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul into a new dental surgery. The chapel is located in Gisburn Road. The dental practice would occupy the ground and first floors of the premises. The proposal also outlines plans to create three apartments on the lower ground floor.
If the plans get the green light from officers at Pendle Borough Council, patients will access the surgery from Gisburn Road. The three one-bedroom apartments would have separate entrances.
The church was founded in 1897 and operated as a Roman Catholic chapel until 2019. The building was sold shortly afterwards.
Mr Friar wants to create a new dental practice over two floors, which would take up 380 square-metres plus three one-bedroom apartments. In the design and access statement, Mr Friar suggests that the exterior will remain largely unchanged with the exception of new, energy-efficient windows. The statement claims that the renovation proposals would have ‘no detrimental impact on the conservation area and the wider listed buildings.’ The change of use to a practice and new housing would ‘secure a future as a beneficial part of the community.’
