A dentist has been struck off the General Dentistry Council register after being found guilty of offering discount dental treatment in return for sexual favours.

Milan Shah, a 43 year old dentist of Indian origin, was working in St Albans when the incident occurred. Shah told Chamelle Courtney, a married mother of five, that he would reduce the price of treatment if she agreed to see him outside of work and bombarded her with phone calls trying to seduce her over a two year period.

Mrs Courtney’s husband had recently suffered brain damage following a severe asthma attack and Shah used this to get close to the woman; he repeatedly told her he could offer her the love she was missing out on and also talked to her about his own marital problems, Mrs Courtney has revealed.

Mrs Courtney recorded telephone conversations which involved Mr Shah offering to reduce the cost of root canal treatment in exchange for sexual favours during a consultation; she took these to the local police force and was advised to show them to the General Dentistry Council. Police advised her to do this because the tapes could not be used as evidence in court because Shah was not aware that the conversation was being recorded.

The GDC later barred Shah and the chairman of the panel, Mary Harley, told Shah that he had betrayed the trust between patient and professional and found him guilty of misconduct. She also condemned Shah’s behaviour, saying that he had shown no remorse for his actions.
