A leading dentist has shared diabetes warning signs to look out for in the mouth and urged patients to attend regular checks in a bid to raise awareness of the symptoms of the condition.

Dr Rizwan Mahmood, co-founder of Ruh Dental and a clinical fellow in oral and maxillofacial surgery, said that many of the signs of diabetes can be spotted in the mouth before they impact other parts of the body. Attending routine appointments enables dentists to keep an eye out for symptoms, ensuring that changes are noted and patients receive an early diagnosis.

Oral symptoms of diabetes include dry mouth, fruity-smelling breath, sore gums and bleeding gums. In some cases, these signs will be linked to other conditions, but it’s always beneficial to get checked out. Diabetes is increasingly common. It can be managed effectively, but it can be severe if left untreated.

If patients do have symptoms of diabetes, which are identified by dental professionals, they will be advised to undergo further tests and checks to confirm a diagnosis. Treatment options include making lifestyle changes, taking medication and using targeted therapies and treatments to manage specific symptoms that affect the eyes, feet and nervous system.

Other symptoms of diabetes include feeling thirsty all the time, urinating more frequently, unexplained weight loss, tiredness, blurred vision, irritability and feeling hungry even after eating.
