According to the Scottish National Party, there has been a significant increase in the number of dentists working in Scotland since 2006.

The SNP said that figures confirmed an increase of 793 dentists, which represents a rise of 32.6 per cent, between September 2006 and September 2013.

The party also stated that there has been an increase in registration numbers for NHS dental patients across the country. In March 2007, 46 per cent of adults and 67 per cent of children were listed on the register of an NHS dental practice, compared to figures of 82 per cent of adults and 91 per cent of children in September 2013. This equates to an increase of more than 1.8 million people using NHS dental services in Scotland since 2007.

Bob Doris, MSP and member of the SNP, said that the latest figures really offer ministers something to smile about and said that the figures for children’s oral health were particularly pleasing, as good oral health in childhood often signals good dental health in adulthood and it is important that children develop good oral hygiene habits at an early age.

In light of the recent figures, Mr Doris urged dental patients to start the New Year with resolutions to improve their health and wellbeing and said that this is the perfect time of year to book a check-up or register with an NHS dentist.
