A dentist has been nominated for a Scottish Health Award after helping to ease a family’s disabled son’s dental agony.

Caroline and Peter Kelbrick nominated dentist, Audrey McClymont for the award in recognition of the care she has given their son, Peter who has a number of serious health conditions.

Peter developed chickenpox when he was just 4 months old and was left with severe health complications, including cerebral palsy, quadriplegia and epilepsy. Peter requires round-the-clock care and his health problems have had a significant impact on his parent’s lives, as well as those of his siblings, Paul and Carly.

The Kilbrick’s nominated Audrey McClymont in the Doctors category for the 2013 Scottish Health Award. Audrey is a paediatric dentist at Yorkhill Hospital for Sick Children and the family have developed a close relationship with her over the years. Peter’s parents explained that Audrey is always at the end of the phone and willing to offer them advice and support whenever they need.

Peter has suffered dental problems from a very early age and when he had seizures he started to bite his lip, which caused him distress and pain. He had to have his teeth extracted to prevent this and Audrey came up with the idea of using laser treatment to help his gums heal quickly. It was a technique she had seen used for leukaemia patients.

Audrey said that it was an honour to be nominated for the award by Caroline and Peter and said that she enjoys working with the family. The ceremony will be held in November and nominations are open until September.
