A retired dentist is using his skills to make a difference in the local community; Dr Howard Stone visits schools with Dental Sealants and More of Peoria to provide preventative dental treatment and check-ups for children from low-income families.

On Tuesday, Dr Stone visited Dennis School and set up a temporary dental clinic to provide examinations and preventative treatments for children who are entitled to free or discounted lunches.

Dental Sealants and More visits schools all over Peoria, Tazewell and Macon counties to provide dental care free of charge and help families who would otherwise struggle to afford dental treatment.

Terri Luckenbill, district health coordinator at the organisation, said that all parents receive a consent form and while many will throw them away because they have private dental insurance, there are always some families that will benefit from the scheme.

Dr Stone treats around 40 per cent of children who are eligible for help and many of them have significant dental problems.

Matt Andrews, principal of Dennis School said that dental problems can have a major impact on performance at school and highlighted the importance of the scheme at the college.
