A dentist from Virginia has written a book to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health.

Charles Martin decided to write the book because he realised that the majority of people have no idea how important their oral health is for the rest of their body. Numerous studies have linked poor oral health to a range of serious illnesses including heart disease, diabetes and arthritis.

Martin said that the majority of Americans have gum disease but are unaware of this because they do not visit their dentist on a regular basis; untreated gum disease can cause harmful bacteria to spread through the body and can contribute to serious health issues.

According to Charles Martin, having a healthy mouth can increase the chances of having a healthy heart and stable body weight. Martin says that oral health is overlooked in most countries in the world and people are consequently unaware of the damage they may be doing to their body by avoiding going to the dentist every twelve months. He wrote the book to allow people to read and learn about the role played by oral health in relation to general health.

To enjoy good oral health, it is important to adopt a good oral hygiene routine, which should include brushing the teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time, flossing and using mouthwash on a daily basis and visiting the dentist at least once every twelve months. Eating healthily also helps to promote good oral health, as well as contributing to good general health and helping to keep body weight healthy and stable.
