Dentist highlights dangers of DIY tooth whitening

Dr Khaled Kasem, chief of orthodontists at Impress, has urged the public to exercise caution when buying DIY whitening products.

Dr Kasem claims that there are several risks associated with using at-home kits and products that have not been approved by dentists. Tooth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments and there has been a huge rise in the number of people having their teeth whitened. Dentists offer in-chair and at-home treatment, but many patients opt for DIY methods, which are significantly cheaper.

Dr Kasem wants people to be aware of the dangers of buying tooth whitening products, especially from online retailers. One of the main problems is the hydrogen peroxide content. Dentists have the expertise and training to administer whitening agents that contain up to 6% hydrogen peroxide, but kits that are sold over the counter should have a maximum content of just 0.1%. A study conducted in 2021 found that some products available online contained more than 300 times the legal limit.

Another issue Dr Kasem highlighted was the fit of home whitening trays. Patients who visit their dentist for treatment have custom-made trays fitted. These trays, which contain whitening agent, are designed to fit the patient perfectly to minimise risks and achieve the best possible results.

With home kits that are available online or over the counter, there is a one-size-fits-all policy. This means that the trays can be uncomfortable and that they can put patients at risk of chemical burns if the soft tissue comes into contact with the whitening agent.

As tooth whitening continues to become more popular, Dr Kasem has urged patients who want a whiter, brighter smile to get in touch with experienced dentists. There are various treatments available and most practices offer payment options to make treatment more affordable.
