Dentist faces the boot for malpractice

A dentist could have to leave the profession after colleagues and patients complained about malpractice.

Dr Radim Kocourek, 42, who worked at the Falsgrave Road practice, Scarborough, was reported to the General Dental Council (GDC) after he left several patient’s teeth in a terrible mess.

He is now facing 30 charges of misconduct against eight patients, some of who had to have teeth pulled.

Dr Kocourek’s former boss, Dr Linda Williams spotted the problems after he had left Falsgrave Road in 2007 and reported him to the GDC.

Five of the eight patients had to have teeth removed because it is alleged that Dr Kocourek failed to notice that they had gum disease.

GDC representative Selva Ramasamy said that an investigation had found that Dr Kocourek’s record keeping, diagnosis and communication was deficient.

He added that five of Dr Kocourek’s patients were at risk of periodontal disease, which affects the gums and bones around the mouth which was caused by bacteria building-up on teeth and often leads to tooth loss.

Dr Kocourek is accused of failing to take adequate steps to provide decent treatment for five patients and two patients may not have been treated at all.

The dentist has admitted failing to diagnose every cavity for one patient and not taking proper medical histories for some other patients which were at risk of developing periodontal disease.

He also admitted that he did not make adequate treatment records or notes of anti-biotic provision, and conceded that his conduct had not been in his patients’ best interests.

However, Dr Kocourek is denying that did not explain adequately the seriousness and risks of periodontal disease and how best to prevent it.
