Dentist Cheats Death: Now Cycles to Save Lives

Dr. Fiona Beddis, cheated death and is nowadays cycling to help save other people’s lives. Dr. Beddis is an honorary clinical lecturer at Newcastle dental hospital. In August of 2006, Dr. Fiona Beddis suffered a brain haemorrhage and was unconscious, when she was rushed to Newcastle General Hospital. There, lifesaving neurosurgery was performed on her. She now believes she was given a second chance at life, and tries to get pleasure from every moment of her life. However, she also wants to give back to others and help save lives. She lost her driver’s license for 6 months, due to the possibility of having seizures. About 5 months later, after re-learning how to walk correctly, she got on her bicycle and was off! Next month she is participating in the 150-mile huge cycle challenge – ‘Ride for the ‘Wave.’ The cycling route of this challenge begins in Glasgow (Fiona’s birthplace) and goes to Newcastle (where Fiona says she was ‘reborn’. The challenge raises money for “The Northern Brainwave Appeal.” Other dentists, and friends, are also participating in the challenge with Fiona. They include: Drs. Valerie Bleau, Helen Stephenson and Sarah Roland; dental managing consultant Sheila Scott; engineer Alan Tuddenham; managing director Rob Youngman; and, Fiona’s brother Gordon Peden.
