Dental students in India are happy with the new internship scheme, which has been introduced as part of the Bachelor’s degree in Dentistry.

The Dental Council of India has announced that internships will be made compulsory for all students undertaking the degree programme. The scheme was removed from the programme three years ago but it will now be reinstalled as representatives believe that the internship year is a vital opportunity for students to develop their clinical skills, as well as additional skills, such as communication and social skills.

Students who started the course in 2008 will be the first intake to complete the internship stage; they must successfully complete the year after four years of study to graduate.

Dr Vishwajeet Mishra said that the internship was a very valuable learning process for the students and dentists, tutors and lecturers and students have welcomed the return of the compulsory internship.
