Medical and dental students from Queen’s University, Belfast are angry after they lost their parking subsidy at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Students training at the hospital had been offered subsidised parking; however, the company that runs the car park has now decided to discontinue the subsidy and students are now facing a significant hike in parking fees.

Dental student, Susan Dornan, set up a Facebook group in protest at the news; she usually pays £1.50 a day for parking but is now facing a fee of £4.10. Miss Dornan said that the price hike had angered students because the increase was so significant and students are already struggling financially.

Medical student Andrew Kerr echoed Miss Dornan’s sentiments; he claimed that everyone is aware that fee increases are happening across many sectors and industries but the increase faced by students is far too large and people simply won’t be able to afford to park at the hospital anymore.

CP Services, the company that runs the car park, said that they were concerned about patients and visitors having to queue to use the car park. A spokesman said that there was a free shuttle bus to the hospital every twenty minutes.
