A dental student is firmly on course to achieve her Olympic dream after winning the 400 metre event at the Northern Ireland Senior Athletics Championships with ease.

Joanna Mills, originally from Ballymena and a dental student at Queen’s University, Belfast, eased through the field to win the event, which took place at The Forum, comfortably, confirming her intent to be part of the Irish 4 X 400 metre relay team, which will participate at the Olympic Games in London in July.

Joanna won the event in 55.09 seconds, which was slightly slower than her season’s best, which she recorded in Geneva just two days previously.

The 19 year old said that she enjoyed the event immensely and added that it was very special to be running on her home track. She said that she had not run her best in Geneva because it was very hot and she did not hit her stride during the first 200 metres.

Joanna is aiming towards the World Junior Championships in Barcelona in July; however, she admitted that the thought of running in the relay at the Olympics was very exciting. Currently, Joanna is ranked third in the country and the chances of her being selected for the relay team are good.

Joanna is now preparing to take part in the AAA Junior Championships in Bedford this weekend.
