Dental school under investigation

An investigation has been launched at the Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis, after a visiting professor expressed concerns about “countless violations” at the facility.

Dr Peter Paris said that during his time at the dental school, numerous issues arose and he was concerned by the daily running of the facility. During the course of a seven month period, Dr Paris claims he witnessed at least 40 violations of the law, including dental hygienists diagnosing patients and suggesting potentially harmful treatments for patients. Dental hygienists do not have a dental license and their work must be approved by a licensed dentist.

Dr John Williams, Dean of the school, has ordered an internal investigation; however, he has expressed that he is confident that his staff have not violated the law. Dr Paris reported his concerns to his supervisor and was immediately reassigned to another department; his contract was not renewed when it came to an end in June. Dr Williams claims that Dr Paris was aware that his contract was coming to an end and it was likely that it would not be renewed and insists that the move was not a means of getting rid of Paris because he raised concerns about the dental school.

Dr Williams said that he would await the results of the investigation and make suitable changes to school policy of irregularities were uncovered.
