Dental practices and GP surgeries are expected to close on Monday 19th September as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The state funeral for Her Majesty the Queen, who died on Thursday 8th September, will be held on Monday 19th, which has been confirmed as a national bank holiday.

To commemorate the Queen, most dental surgeries and GP practices across the UK are expected to shut for the day. Some clinics may remain open and NHS England has liaised with GP and dental service providers to ensure that patients will be able to access urgent care. NHS 111 will be available and emergency services will not be affected.

Millions of people will be taking the day off work to visit London or watch the funeral from their homes. NHS England is expecting a higher rate of no-shows than usual and has encouraged patients to keep to appointment times or cancel well in advance.

GP surgeries and dental practices have been urged to contact patients as soon as possible to notify them of changes to scheduled appointments and rebook appointments.

In a letter to local NHS bosses, NHS England urged those in charge of organising the autumn Covid booster rollout to continue as planned, despite the bank holiday. The first stage of the booster vaccine programme covers the most vulnerable, including care home residents.
