Dental practices send one million text messages

Dental practices using Software of Excellence have collectively sent one million text messages to patients, it has been revealed.

It is estimated that 51 million people use mobile phones in the UK and text messaging is an easy, quick way to reach them. An increasing number of dental practices are now using text messages to remind patients about dental appointments and text messages also have additional benefits, as they are considerably cheaper than phone calls and letters and leave the practice contact number on the patient’s phone, which enables them to call back very easily if necessary. Practices can also send out additional information to patients via text message.

Many dental practices have adopted text messaging and members of staff have claimed that using text messages helps to improve the efficiency of the practice; Teresa Biggs, from the Lighthouse Dental Practice in Ipswich, sends messages to remind patients about their appointment 48 hours before the scheduled appointment; she claims this has reduced the number of missed appointments by 50 percent and enabled patients to change or cancel their appointment in plenty of time.

Software of Excellence users are able to automatically set their programme to send out text messages to patients and the new version also enables users to check the delivery status of the messages.

Greg Clay, sales and marketing director of Software of Excellence, said he was delighted with the success of the programme and extremely pleased that users had reached the collective total of one million text messages.
